The "Peace Sign" was designed by Gerald Holmes as a logo for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) in the 1950s and was subsequently adopted by the anti-war and counterculture activists in the US and elsewhere. It is a superimposition of the semaphore (visual signaling) signals for the letters "N" and "D".
